25 Things About Me: Batman

25 things About Me: Batman

Written by Podunker:The Liztress

1. My favorite color is not black, despite the fact I’m seen wearing it all the time. Black happens to be the only color my Batsuit comes in and it helps me hide in the shadows.

2. Arkham Asylum is not the best place to be a security officer at. Many of the criminals I have turned over to the Warden are considered extremely dangerous.

3. Being rich has its perks; having a butler to take care of you and offer valuable advice, women for each day of the week, a slew of Bat toys, and no one ever suspecting that I, Bruce Wayne, am Batman.

4. It’s been rumored that I have been with many women and while I have been with most, there is only one I would like to get to know: Harley Quinn. It’s just a shame that she’s nuts about the Joker.

5. My favorite animal is the eagle. This bird is a strong symbol for justice and is a very majestic creature.

6. And no, Dick Grayson is not my secret boyfriend. He is my partner in fighting crime.

7. Music I like to listen to is hard rock. It gets my blood boiling and makes those long drives to criminal hideouts less boring.

8. I have starred in at least 19 video games. Batman: Arkham Asylum is my latest endeavor into this business.

9. For Halloween, I like to dress up as Robin and he dresses up like me.

10. Friday nights are poker nights for me and the other super heroes. But don’t play against Superman if you like to cheat, he likes to use his ability to see through your clothes before each game.

11. A guilty pleasure of mine is to take long bubble baths after a hard day’s work. Don’t knock it until you try it. Bubbles have a way of relaxing your mind.

12. I own the complete set of Teen Titans episodes. It’s the only cartoon I like to watch, besides those about me.

13. When I am not saving Gotham, my hobbies include: reorganizing the Bat cave, teaching kids how to use the Batarang properly, prank calling the Ghostbusters, and working out.

14. While I do work out often, I had Alfred make sure each Batsuit comes molded with tons of muscles. This is just in case I am too busy to hit the gym.

15. My favorite color is yellow. When you work in the dark as much as I do, you’ll learn to appreciate bright colors.

16. The few people that know my true identity are either my current partner or past ones. Everyone is made to sign a contract stating that if they let the secret slip, I have the right to lock them up in Arkham Asylum with the others who tried to tell.

17. I might not have the super powers like the other Justice League members, but I make up for it with my intelligence and hefty bank account.

18. Before I became the Batman, my goal was to become a world famous chef. You think Alfred cooks? No, I do the cooking and I rarely splurge on take out.

19. I have one son, Damien Wayne, who will be Robin one day.

20. I have “died” multiple times. But it’s really just an excuse for me taking a vacation.

21. My library is full of first edition copies of masterpieces by William Shakespeare, Homer, Edgar Allan Poe, and Dean Koontz.

22. Commissioner Gordan is a good friend of mine. He always takes the speeding tickets and parking tickets written for me off the record book.

23. In the beginning, my Batsuit consisted of leggings and plastic. Now, thanks to modern technology, it’s made of a classified material.

24. I’m a closet fan of Michael Jackson. His music is wonderful and besides, I was the one who taught him to moonwalk. Though I still think my name for it was better: the Batwalk.

25. Out of all the criminals I have arrested, only a couple are ones I consider my true archenemies. They are the Joker, Catwoman, and Two Face. The rest are slowly getting on my nerves.

HI. PLEASE STOP COMMENTING (AND STATING THE OBVIOUS) HOW THERE ARE MANY ASIANS IN THE VIDEO. I live in a LA neighborhood where the majority are asian, and if that is a complete shock to you, you need to get out more. Yes! It’s finally here. Halloween has come and gone once again. This year’s prank, in my honest opinion, was not as great as last years. It was extremely crowded and things did not run smoothly; however, we got through it. Here’s the video. Hope you somehow like it. Because of youtube, the video is in low quality so it’s also kind of dark to see. I’ll try to upload a high quality version on my site. I also want to say thanks to everyone who came to help. I went through a lot of pressure to get everything done and to make it turn out well.

Italian Flavors

Italian Flavors

Being Italian means the rich history, the cuisine, the wines, the fine clothing and accessories by Italian designers, the unique people’s names like Guido, Fabio, Rosalia and Filomena. Most of all, Il Calcio (soccer), biking, the alluring beaches, the majestic mountains, fishing, il pisolino (afternoon nap), and house parties. A flair to live life to its fullness is an Italian trait quite visible and historical. Italian means dressing up for Il Carnevale, which is a sort of Halloween weeks long celebration, with lots of fun for kids and grownups alike.

During Il Carnevale, which starts the day after the Feast of Saint Agatha on February 4th and ends the day before Ash Wednesday, kids and adults dress up in costume. Kids go from house to house, like they do on Halloween here in the States, to get treats and to throw confetti (i coriandoli). Grownups attend lavish masquerade balls, or house parties if the money is tight. This tradition , which started during the late Medieval Times masquerade balls, was later enriched by La Commedia Dell’Arte because of its popular and funny characters like Arlecchino, Pantalone, Dottore, Capitano, Colombina e Mirandolina. La Commedia is comedy shows performed for free at the town square during the seventeen century and even nowadays during festivals. La Commedia is often impromptu and has themes like the lord of the house wooing and pestering the maid.

Venice and Viareggio are known for their fantastic celebration of Il Carnevale, taken even to the streets. Treats like strufoli and zeppole (pastries) , and castagne (roasted chestnuts) are enjoyed by everyone. The mood is A Carnevale ogni scherzo vale (At Carnival time every practical joke is fine). Il Carnivale is the highlights of winter fun, besides skiing on the sharp Italian mountains like the Alps and the Apennines.

Spring, summer and fall make the evenings enchanting with house parties on the terrace under a smiling moon where music to dance to, finger food and pastry to please the ear and palate. Common pastries are cannoli, granita (Italian ice), briosche (Italian croissants). Common drinks are Campari or Cynar on ice. If you like serious liquor, have a Grappa or Strega. House parties are a great means for students to socialize, make friends and find a sweetheart.

Ferragosto is a month long summer celebration. Italians take all month of August off. People who live in the mountains go to the seashore. People who live by the beach go to the country side. City folks prefer the islands of Sicily, Sardinia or smaller islands like Capri, Alba, and the Aeolian islands. Everyone loves and visits the major cities of Venice, Milan, Florence, Naples, and Rome for their history, art and fine cuisine.

During Ferragosto, Italy becomes the Garden of Eden where fruits and vegetables are everywhere: on every street stands and al mercato (outdoor market): delicious watermelons, sweet grapes, apricots, plums and peaches, all kind of tomatoes, oranges, tangerines, eggplants, cucumbers, zucchini, and squash. Italy is also the land of picturesque vineyards and olive trees. The Virgin Mary is honored during Ferragosto in the Feast of the Ascension on August 15. Of course when it’s so hot, Italians like to take an afternoon nap.

As saying goes “When an Italian sleeps alone, he or she sleeps with the angels; when the Italian doesn’t sleep alone, the angels look the other way.” This is romance Italian style! Of course, the only reason Italians may take an afternoon nap is because they work from 8:00am to noon, go home for four hours to eat and enjoy romance then back to work at 4:00pm until 8:00pm. The evening is to have supper with the family then go out and socialize with friends at the bar. A bar in Italy is also an ice cream parlor, coffee house and pastry shop.

The fall is for wine making. Even though machinery have taken over, grape stomping is still going on at least for entertainment and to keep the tradition. The vineyard owner invites family, neighbors, and friends who hand pick ripe grapes; then grape stomping starts. The midday meal at grape harvest usually consists of spaghetti with marinara sauce, stockfish alla cacciatore, seasonal fruits, popular Italian cheeses and, of course, the prior season’s wine. A beautiful tradition is the guests make toasts in rhyme while enjoying the meal. One guest toasts “To wine-making, to health and prosperity!” Going around the table another say “May the white wine have perfect clarity!”, and another guest may continue with “The meal is delicious in true sincerity.” Jokes and pranks add to the joyful event. Guys woo the present girls by making poetic toasts and by trying to get the girls drunk. All at the table joke, tease each other while older folks remember “the good old days”. The fun is real and wine is made. Viva l’Italia!

Most holidays are the same like in America and in Europe: Christmas Eve/Day, Easter and New Year Eve/Day; others are unique to Italy and to Italy’s neighboring countries, like La Festa della Befana. La Befana is a good witch who brings presents to kids on the Epiphany Eve. Another holiday is Easter Monday, which Italians take very seriously. Easter Monday excursions to the country side and stopping at a local trattoria (a diner) for a fine meal or alla salumeria (a deli) for sandwiches are quite refreshing and very welcome after the forty days of Lent, the season for penitence and introspection.

Other popular religious Italian holidays are La Festa di San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph’s Day) on March 19, Il Giono di Tutti i Santi (All Saints Day) November 1, Il Giorno dei Morti (All Souls Day) November 2, and L’Immacolata Concezione (the Immaculate Conception) on December 8 .

I must confess I am partial to Saint Joseph’s Day, a popular Southern Italy holiday with a unique dinner (pranzo) menu: peachicks and rise soup, baccala (stockfish), fried calamari, stuffed artichokes, broccoli of rabe in garlic sauce, rise balls, and zeppole for dessert. Because Saint Joseph’s takes place during Lent there are no meat dishes at the table where nineteen guests are invited and seated (19 because of March 19). The hosts and the guests recite a brief thanksgiving prayer before and several times during dinner: “Questa casa consolata sia con Gesu’, Giuseppe e Maria!” (Let this house find always comfort in Jesus, Joseph and Mary!).

Italian baby naming conventions are quite simple: the first boy is named after his paternal grandfather, the second after his maternal grandfather; the first girl after her paternal grandmother, the second after her maternal grandmother; subsequent offsprings are named after a favorite uncle, aunt or very close family friend. In my case, I was named Joseph after my paternal grandfather. Italians celebrate also name days, besides birthdays.

The flavors of the Italian cuisine suit every palate. Northern dishes like risotto, osso buco, gnocchi, spaghetti with pesto sauce, and southern dishes like lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, baked ziti, stuffed shells, and pasta with marinara sauce are only a few. The list is far too long to be even mentioned here. What about pizza? Regular, Sicilian or spingioni. I knew I was going to catch you on this one! Ah, ah! Spingioni is a pizza made on the eve of major holidays when abstinence from meat is traditionally required: Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and Good Friday. The pizza is topped with tomato sauce, sliced onions and peppers (previously sautéed in olive oil and butter), breadcrumbs seasoned with parmesan cheese, oregano, parsley, basil, rosemary and olive oil. The pizza is baked while it is pressed down by a skilled, which is removed a few minutes before the pizza is ready, to have a crispy top.

Italian is the language of poets: Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca, and Giovanni Boccaccio. It’s the language of artists: Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raffaello Sanzio. Italians celebrate their patriots in Giuseppe Garibaldi and Giuseppe Mazzini, composers in Giuseppe Verdi and Gioachino Rossini, and in inventors like Guglielmo Marconi. What about love, passion and pure lust? Visit Verona and admire Juliet’s balcony climbed by Romeo every night so he could be with his Juliet.

Like people of any nationality, Italians are proud of their heritage: they treasure it, they love it, and they perpetuate it. Beliefs, customs, history, culture, religion, arts and teachings make people who they are. They define and shape the individual in the continuity of history and civilization, and in the eternal flux of progress which makes the human soul reach beyond the heavens to touch the hand of God.

Joseph Mangraviti, author of
Hooked on You (heart-felt poems)
, was born in Genoa, Italy. After completing high school in Messina, Italy, he came with only a pocketful of dreams to the States where he received a college education. The dreams became accomplishments in time. Mr. Mangraviti lives in New Jersey with his wife and kids. He has always enjoyed reading and writing poetry and, most of all, sharing it with family, friends and the public.

Princess Leia Organa

Princess Leia Organa

Appearances

Star Wars films

Early life

Baby Leia being put in the care of Bail Organa and his wife after the death of her mother, the fall of her father, and the separation between her and her brother.

By the fictional chronology, Leia first appears in Revenge of the Sith, when Padm gives birth to her and Luke at Polis Massa.

After Padm’s death, Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda decide that they must hide the Skywalker children from their father, former Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, who had recently turned to the dark side and became the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Leia is sent to Alderaan with the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO with her adoptive parents, Bail and Breha Organa, so she would not be found by the Empire.

According to the Expanded Universe, Leia is raised with Winter, who becomes her handmaiden later on in life, as well as her children’s nanny.

At the age of 16, Leia becomes the youngest member of the Imperial Senate and becomes good friends with Senator Pooja Naberrie of Naboo, her maternal cousin. She also becomes one of the driving forces behind the Rebel Alliance, the New Republic and even later, the Galactic Alliance. She serves the Senate until Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious dissolves it. Three years before Episode 4, she is taken as a hostage to Kashyyyk, to stop adoptive ther Bail Organa from speaking out against Darth Sidious. After being saved by the young Galen Marek, she is later present at the formation of the Rebel Alliance on Corellia, which is disturbed by Darth Vader, seeking Marek, his secret Apprentice. She is at the formation via transmission, and Vader never actually sees her when raiding the rebel Alliances’s formation headquarters. She later chooses the symbol of the Rebel Alliance as the Marek family crest.

A New Hope

Princess Leia aboard the Death Star with her, at the time, unknown twin brother Luke Skywalker, and future husband Han Solo.

In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Darth Vader captures her onboard the ship Tantive IV, where she is acting as a spy for the Rebellion. He accuses her of being a traitor and demands to know the location of the secret technical plans of the Death Star, the Empire’s newest and most powerful weapon. Unknown to him, the young senator has hidden the plans inside an Astromech droid, R2-D2, and has sent it to find Obi-Wan Kenobi on the nearby planet of Tatooine. Later, Vader has her tortured, but she resists telling him anything. Still believing she could be useful, the Death Star’s commander, Grand Moff Tarkin, threatens to destroy Alderaan with the superweapon unless she reveals the location of the hidden Rebel base. She still does not give in and lies to them, as Tarkin orders Alderaan to be destroyed anyway. She is finally rescued by unlikely heroes: Luke Skywalker, an elderly Obi-Wan Kenobi, the cocky smuggler Han Solo, the Wookiee Chewbacca, and the two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO. When they finally escape, at the expense of Obi-Wan’s life (sacrificed in a duel with Vader), they take part in the Battle of Yavin. Luke, in his one-man X-wing fighter, destroys the Death Star. In the Massassi Temple at the hidden Rebel base on Yavin 4, the radiant Princess Leia Organa presents the Alderaanian Medal of Freedom to her rescuers and the heroes of the battle.

The Empire Strikes Back

Three years later, in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Leia is at the Rebel base on Hoth When Luke was rescued after being knocked unconscious in the snow storm, Leia began to worry for Luke. Later Han rescues Luke and back at the base, Leia tells Han that he probably doesn’t know everything about women and then kisses Luke. Leia later helps with the evacuation of Hoth. Despite the ongoing battle, she remains vigilant and issues commands from the crumbling base. She flees with C-3PO, Han, and Chewbacca on Han’s ship, the Millennium Falcon. Although they are pursued by Imperial TIE fighters, they dodge their fire by flying into an asteroid field when the Falcon’s hyperdrive breaks down. Despite Leia’s having kissed Luke earlier and being constantly at odds with Han, romance blossoms; while hiding in the stomach of a space slug, she finally shares a kiss with the scruffy-looking Corellian smuggler. Later, when they stop at Bespin for repairs, Han’s friend Lando Calrissian turns them over to Vader, who uses them as bait for Luke. Han is also used as a test subject for the carbon freezing chamber meant for Luke, and it is there that Leia finally confesses her love for Han. Vader then gives the frozen Han to bounty hunter Boba Fett to give to Jabba the Hutt, to whom Han owes a very large debt. Later, Lando helps Leia, Chewbacca, and the two droids escape. While escaping, she senses that Luke is in trouble and makes them go back for him. They save Luke, who is badly hurt after a near-fatal duel against Vader, who has revealed that he is Luke’s father.

Return of the Jedi

In Return of the Jedi, Leia, Chewbacca, Lando, Luke (now nearly a Jedi Knight), and the droids go to Tatooine to try to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt. Leia’s part of the plan consists of posing as the Ubese bounty hunter Boushh, who will turn Chewbacca over to Jabba. Her ruthless bargaining as Boushh, negotiating the price for Chewbacca at the end of a thermal detonator, impresses Jabba and Boba Fett enough to allow her quarters in the palace for the night. The Huttese gangster eventually discovers her real identity, captures her, makes her his new slave girl, and forces her to wear her now iconic metal bikini after she frees Han from the carbonite.

After Luke kills the Rancor, Jabba sentences Luke and Han to be fed to the Sarlacc. Just as all seems lost, Lando, disguised as a guard, helps Luke and Han overpower their captors. Leia seizes the moment to kill Jabba by strangling him with the very chain that bound her. R2-D2 cuts her loose, and after Luke boards the sailbarge, he rescues Leia. With Leia’s help, Luke uses a deck cannon to blow up his barge as they swing to safety.

While preparing for a last battle with the Empire on Endor, Luke reveals to a stunned Leia that she is, in fact, his twin sister, and that Vader is their father. Initially reluctant to believe him, Leia realizes that Luke speaks the truth and joins Han Solo in leading the Rebels in battle on Endor as the Rebel Fleet battle the second Death Star. Leia is injured in the battle, but the Rebels, allied with the Ewoks, are victorious over the Empire.

The Star Wars Holiday Special

Leia and C-3PO in The Star Wars Holiday Special

Leia briefly appears in the 1978 TV movie The Star Wars Holiday Special, where she is once again portrayed by Fisher. In the show, Leia is a leader and administrator of the new Rebel Alliance base. She is accompanied by C-3PO when contacting Chewbacca’s wife, Mallatobuck, for assistance in finding Chewbacca and Han. She also appears in the cartoon segment at a different Rebel Base, located in an asteroid field, and at the Life Day ceremony at the end of the film.

Leia also appeared in and hosted the November 18, 1978 episode of Saturday Night Live that aired one day after the holiday special. The Summer 1983 issue of Rolling Stone magazine poked fun at this appearance.

Alderaan

After the Rebellion’s victory on Endor, Leia establishes New Alderaan, a sanctuary for the destroyed planet’s surviving inhabitants. The Royal House of Alderaan, in the person of Leia Organa Solo and her children, continues to hold sovereignty over both New Alderaan and the old Alderaan system. Her title is largely ceremonial, however, as the government on New Alderaan actually administers the Alderaan system and New Alderaan in her name. Alderaan thus has been ruled under what seems to be a constitutional monarchy.

The New Republic

Princess Organa is a founding member of the New Republic. Although most of her life is devoted to such matters of state, she engages in limited study of the Jedi arts, with Luke as her teacher. Notably, she wields a blue lightsaber that she built herself.

In the book Queen of the Empire by Paul Davids and Hollace Davids, she gets kidnapped by the “Prophets of the Dark Side” to try to get brainwashed and become loyal to the Empire and to also marry Trioculus but this plan failed to which Trioculus got tricked with a Leia droid which also killed him; this disrupted a planned wedding to Han which was later done in The Courtship of Princess Leia.

In the book Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, Luke builds her a green lightsaber which she uses to help free the Noghri from their perceived debt to the Empire. Luke then gives her a red one to complement the weapon she had constructed earlier.

After a near-disastrous courtship in which Prince Isolder vies for Leia’s affections, she marries Han. As described in The Courtship of Princess Leia, Han kidnaps Leia and takes her to a planet he had won in a game of sabacc named Dathomir. There they encounter the Nightsisters, whose attempt to escape eventually leads to the demise of the Warlord Zsinj and his empire, equal rival at this time to both the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic.

At first, Leia does not want to have children, fearing they would succumb to the Dark Side as her father had done. In the novel Tatooine Ghost, however, she begins to understand what happened to her father to bring him to the Dark Side. When she and Han go on a mission to Tatooine to retrieve the Alderaanian moss-painting Killik Twilight and the Rebel code hidden within it, Leia discovers her grandmother Shmi Skywalker’s diary and, with the help of her father’s childhood
