The machine is not a problem. All machines will handle pleather and similar fabrics. The key is how to get the fabric to slide under the presser foot. I suggest using a roll of adding machine tape to sew through, eliminating drag. Cutting the columns of a newspaper works, too, as the columns are a good width and are uniform throughout the paper. Just sandwich the seam between two strips of paper and sew. The paper tears away along the perforations made by the needle as you sew. Use a needle size 14 or larger. Size 18 is made for sewing denim, so it might be too big for pleather. You want a sturdy needle, but you don't want to make holes so large that the pleather starts to tear. FYI, pleather is meant to be sewn on a home sewing machine. It comes out just fine. Trust me.
